National Guard Honors NYSTEC

ROME, NY, April 21, 2006 - In a ceremony held this morning at NYSTEC’s Rome headquarters building, New York Army National Guard Colonel Dan Travers thanked his employer, the New York State Technology Enterprise Corp., for supporting him and other company employees and their family members who were recently deployed on military assignments to the Middle East .  Travers presented a Commander’s Public Service Award and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Five-Star Award to NYSTEC President Bill Pirillo in appreciation for his company’s support of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Travers, 50, petitioned for the awards upon his return in December from an 18-month assignment including 13 months of service in Iraq and Kuwait with the 42nd Infantry Division, also known as the “Rainbow Division.”  At NYSTEC, Travers works as a project manager on the Statewide Wireless Network, a planned land-mobile radio system that will cover all of New York State .   Travers is a resident of Guilderland , NY .

“The Commander’s Public Service Award is the Army National Guard’s way of thanking Bill Pirillo and everyone at NYSTEC for their steady support,” said Travers.  “The Five-Star Award is the highest offered by the ESGR.  It recognizes NYSTEC for going above and beyond the legal requirements to accommodate employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.”

“The company was very accommodating to me before, during and after my deployment to Iraq ,” added Travers.  “Not only did employees take up my workload with very little advance notice, the company also initiated an extensive support operation in which a total of 45 care packages were sent to soldiers stationed at Forward Operating Base DANGER in Tikrit , Iraq .  These packages contained food and personal care items for soldiers who were serving their country in a very dangerous place, and were very much appreciated by everyone.”

In Iraq , Travers supervised a staff of 45 service members who installed and maintained communications systems serving 23,000 soldiers and civilians, and had oversight of over 800 soldiers in the two signal battalions supporting Task Force Liberty.  The 42nd Infantry Division commanded Task Force Liberty in Iraq ’s Sunni Triangle in the first deployment of a National Guard unit to a combat theater in over 60 years.  The communications networks installed, operated and maintained by Task Force Liberty comprised the most complex tactical communications system ever assembled.

Jesse Miller , an engineer in NYSTEC’s Rome office, also served in the Persian Gulf as a Marine Lance Corporal with the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.   In addition, Specialist Matthew Costello, the son of NYSTEC-Rome employee Patricia Ward, and Sergeant John A. Ross, the son-in-law of NYSTEC-Rome employee Howard Beagle, recently returned from National Guard assignments in Iraq .
