| NYSTEC Lends Support to BRAC Effort |
ROME, NY, April 20, 2005 - In a ceremony held this afternoon at his company's Rome headquarters, NYSTEC Executive Director Bill Pirillo presented Mohawk Valley EDGE President Steven J. DiMeo with a check for $1,860 to help EDGE defend federal government facilities at Griffiss Business and Technology Park from possible closure this year.
EDGE will spend the funds on efforts to keep the Air Force Research Lab Rome Research Site, the Northeast Air Defense Sector, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service center off the closure list to be announced by the federal Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission in September. Keeping federal jobs in Rome is very important to NYSTEC employees, who personally donated $930 to the EDGE effort. NYSTEC matched its employee donations with an additional $930.
"As a successful not-for-profit company, NYSTEC is committed to the public good, "said Pirillo. "I can‚t think of a more sincere expression of this commitment than to help these government operations at Griffiss remain strong players in our local economy. Many of our employees remember their neighbors‚ experiences in 1995, and they know how important it is to keep these jobs in Rome."
"I would like to thank NYSTEC and its employees for their great generosity, said DiMeo. "This donation will help preserve the infrastructure of our region's knowledge-based economy."
Under the schedule adopted by Congress, the Defense Secretary will recommend facilities for closure to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission by May 16, 2005. The BRAC Commission will then review the Secretary‚s proposals before making a final decision in September.
