NYSTEC History

NYSTEC is a not-for-profit company founded by New York State in 1995, the same year Griffiss Air Force Base closed in Rome, NY. The timing was no coincidence: NYSTEC was formed to help leverage the technologies and expertise at Rome Laboratory (now the Air Force Research Laboratory's Rome Research Site) to benefit New York State businesses and government entities in the wake of the base closing. NYSTEC's main office is co-located with the Rome Research Site at the former base, now called the Griffiss Business and Technology Park.

Thanks to successful projects with New York State agencies, NYSTEC has become a trusted technology advisor to government agencies and private institutions. Today the company's primary business thrust is to assist governments with planning, procuring and integrating new communications and computing systems and technologies. NYSTEC also provides engineering services in such areas as communications, telecommunications and information security. The company still taps Air Force technologies, expertise and resources at the Rome Research Site. In addition, NYSTEC provides specialized services to organizations outside New York State.

In 1995, Syracuse Research Corporation won the competitive process to manage NYSTEC. NYSTEC began with three employees, and now employs 65 people, most of them engineers. In keeping with the state's original plan for the company, NYSTEC does not receive administrative funding in the New York State budget. All NYSTEC revenues are derived from services the company provides to clients.

NYSTEC's project managers and engineers help agencies with all phases of technology acquisition and integration. NYSTEC employs a proven process to manage each acquisition. The process, known as System Integration Management, is derived in part from practices conceived and perfected by the U.S. Department of Defense and AFRL-Rome.  Legislation and a special contract with New York State have made NYSTEC a link between New York State government and the federal laboratory. This arrangement allows state agencies to approach NYSTEC with their computer and communications problems. In turn, the company's engineers and project managers help to find solutions.
